The area known as White Mountain is a mountain range and mountainous region in the eastern part of Arizona near the border of New Mexico—a continuation from the west of the Arizona transition zone known as the Mogollon Rim. Nearby communities include Show Low, Pinetop-Lakeside, Greer, Springerville, Eagar, Snowflake, Taylor, Concho, Heber-Overgaard, and McNary. Though much of the area is within the Navajo Nation, the part outside the reservation is in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests.

Families are drawn to the natural beauty and mild weather and while some 20,000 call the area home, many Phoenix and Tucson residents have summer vacation homes here to escape the heat of the desert floor. With towering ponderosa pines, Pinetop-Lakeside is typically 30° cooler than the large cities to the southwest.
